The Whitham Equations for Optical Communications: Mathematical Theory of NRZ

We present a model of optical communication system for high-bitrate data transmission in the nonreturn-to-zero (NRZ) format over transoceanic distance. The system operates in a small group velocity dispersion regime, and the model equation is given by the Whitham equations describing the slow modulation of multi-phase wavetrains of the (defocusing) nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation. The mode...

On the Whitham Equations for the Defocusing Complex Modified KdV Equation

We study the Whitham equations for the defocusing complex modified KdV (mKdV) equation. These Whitham equations are quasilinear hyperbolic equations and they describe the averaged dynamics of the rapid oscillations which appear in the solution of the mKdV equation when the dispersive parameter is small. The oscillations are referred to as dispersive shocks. The Whitham equations for the mKdV eq...

Analytical Approximate Solution For Nonlinear Time-Space Fractional Fornberg-Whitham Equation By Fractional Complex Transform

In this article, fractional complex transform with optimal homotopy analysis method (OHAM) is used to obtain numerical and analytical solutions for the nonlinear time-space fractional Fornberg-Whitham. Fractional complex transform is proposed to convert time-space fractional Fornberg-Whitham equation to the nonlinear ordinary differential equations and then applied OHAM to the new obtained equa...

A numerical study of the Whitham equation as a model for steady surface water waves

The object of this article is the comparison of numerical solutions of the so-called Whitham equation describing wave motion at the surface of a perfect fluid to numerical approximations of solutions of the full Euler free-surface water-wave problem. The Whitham equation ηt + 3 2 c0 h0 ηηx +Kh0∗ ηx = 0 was proposed by Whitham [33] as an alternative to the KdV equation for the description of sur...

On Whitham theory for perturbed integrable equations

Whitham theory of modulations is developed for periodic waves described by nonlinear wave equations integrable by the inverse scattering transform method associated with 2 × 2 matrix or second order scalar spectral problems. The theory is illustrated by derivation of the Whitham equations for perturbed Korteweg-de Vries equation and nonlinear Schrödinger equation with linear damping.
